AVEVA in Central Queensland
AVEVA (formerly Schneider Electric Software, formerly Wonderware) SCADA and HMI platforms are widely deployed across Central Queensland mining, water utilities, and processing operations. The installed base spans a wide range of versions - from legacy Wonderware InTouch applications that have been running for 15 or more years through to current AVEVA System Platform and Historian installations.
The product line has gone through significant rebranding and acquisition history, which means the documentation, licensing, and support landscape can be confusing. Understanding which version of a product is running, what it is called now, and what the migration path looks like requires experience with the actual platform history.
System Platform architecture
AVEVA System Platform is an object-oriented SCADA platform built around a Galaxy repository model. Applications are built from object instances that inherit from templates - changes to templates propagate to instances, which makes large-scale SCADA applications more maintainable than equivalent InTouch applications.
System Platform is the platform of choice for large, multi-server SCADA deployments - mine-wide monitoring systems, regional water authority SCADA, and multi-site manufacturing operations. The object model and Galaxy administration require a different approach to engineering than standalone InTouch.
InTouch and legacy migration
Standalone InTouch remains in widespread use across CQ industry. Many sites have InTouch applications that have been in service for a decade or more, modified by multiple engineers, and no longer reflect the installed system accurately. Rationalisation, documentation, and modernisation of these applications - whether in-place or as part of a System Platform migration - is a regular part of our SCADA work.
