Siemens S7 PLC & TIA Portal Engineering

Beetle Engineering programs, commissions and supports Siemens S7 PLC systems across manufacturing, water utilities, food processing and mining applications in Central Queensland. We work across the S7 range from legacy S7-300 and S7-400 hardware through to current S7-1200 and S7-1500 platforms using TIA Portal.

Siemens in Central Queensland industry

Siemens S7 PLCs appear across a range of Central Queensland industrial applications - processing plant and utilities on mining sites, water and wastewater treatment infrastructure for local councils, manufacturing and food processing operations across the region.

The S7-300 and S7-400 platforms have been the workhorse of Siemens industrial automation for decades and are still running on many CQ sites. Siemens has moved the current product range to S7-1200 and S7-1500 with TIA Portal as the unified engineering environment - these are the platforms being specified for new installations and upgrade projects.

TIA Portal and legacy STEP 7

TIA Portal is Siemens’ unified engineering environment covering PLC programming, HMI configuration, network setup, and safety programming. It handles S7-1200, S7-1500, WinCC HMI panels, and SIMATIC ET 200 distributed I/O in a single project.

Legacy S7-300 and S7-400 systems programmed in STEP 7 (Classic) can be imported into TIA Portal, which is the typical starting point for migration projects. The import is not always clean - program structure, symbol tables, and hardware configuration all require review and correction - but it gives a starting point for the S7-1500 replacement program.

WinCC HMI and SCADA

WinCC covers a range of Siemens HMI and SCADA products from panel HMIs (Comfort and Unified panels) through to PC-based SCADA (WinCC Advanced and Professional). We develop and modify WinCC projects across this range as part of PLC and control system work, and as standalone HMI improvement projects.

FAQ

Siemens questions.

We work on S7-300, S7-400, S7-1200, and S7-1500 hardware. TIA Portal is our primary engineering environment for current platforms. We also work in STEP 7 for legacy S7-300 and S7-400 systems. HMI work covers WinCC Comfort/Advanced and WinCC Unified panels, as well as WinCC SCADA on PC platforms.
Yes. S7-300 and S7-400 migrations to S7-1500 are a growing project type as older hardware approaches end of support. TIA Portal includes migration tools that assist with the conversion, but the program review and verification work is the critical part. We assess the existing system, document I/O and logic, develop the S7-1500 replacement, and commission the cutover during a planned shutdown window.
Yes. PROFINET is the standard communication protocol for current Siemens systems and we configure, commission and diagnose PROFINET networks as part of PLC and control system work. We also work on older PROFIBUS installations and can assist with migration from PROFIBUS to PROFINET where required.
We work in all IEC 61131-3 languages available in TIA Portal - Structured Text (SCL), Ladder Diagram, Function Block Diagram, and Statement List. For new projects we generally favour Structured Text for complex logic and Ladder for interlock and control logic where the plant team needs to read the program. We adapt to site standards and the programming language the existing system uses.
